Why do airlines use simulator assessments?
Airlines frequently use simulator assessments as part of their recruitment process. The aim is to determine whether you’re likely to complete a type-rating course within the minimum footprint, and that you won’t represent a training risk to the airline – both now and in the future. In short, it’s their way of checking you’re ready for the demands of the role.
What is contained in a pilot simulator assessment?
Most airline simulator assessments follow a broadly similar theme. You’ll almost certainly be assessed against the IATA pilot competencies, with a scenario designed to bring these out. It will usually be flown manually using “raw data,” though some use of the autopilot may be allowed, and the scenario will typically include an element designed to increase the crew’s workload. Our Simulator Assessment Preparation Coaching is specifically designed to train you to evidence the IATA pilot competencies in a simulator assessment.
What aircraft simulator do you use for training?
Our training is designed around the pilot competencies, and it’s delivered online rather than in a simulator. While jumping into a sim for practice can be helpful, it’s usually the non-technical competencies – not manual flying – that catch pilots out in an assessment. That’s why our coaching focuses on those competencies and the techniques to evidence them, which is where preparation time makes the biggest difference.
What are the most common reasons pilots are unsuccessful in a sim assessment?
It’s rarely raw handling. In our experience, it’s far more often the non-technical competencies – situational awareness, workload management, communication and decision-making – that catch people out. A candidate can fly the aircraft perfectly well but still struggle if their capacity is consumed by the flying, leaving nothing spare for the wider picture. Understanding this shift in emphasis is often the difference-maker, and it’s exactly what our coaching is built around.
I'm a military pilot - will this work for me?
Yes. Flight Deck Wingman was founded by a former military pilot, so we understand military backgrounds well – whether you’re from a fast-jet, multi-engine or rotary world. The coaching helps you translate your existing skills and airmanship into what an airline sim assessment is specifically looking for, and shows you how the competency-based approach applies to a civilian selection environment that may work quite differently from what you’re used to.
How is the coaching delivered, and do I need any special equipment?
It’s a three-hour one-to-one session delivered online via video call, with screen sharing so your Wingman can walk you through everything visually. You don’t need any special equipment beyond a computer, a camera and a stable internet connection – no simulator or software required. Every session is human-led by a current airline pilot and recruiter, so it’s real, personal coaching focused on exactly where you need it. You’ll also receive a copy of the Simulator Assessment Preparation eBook to support your training.
Will you tell me what my specific airline's sim assessment involves?
Our approach is ‘Techniques Not Tip Offs’, so rather than trying to tell you exactly what one airline’s sim assessment contains, we train you in reliable techniques that work for any simulator assessment. That’s a more honest approach and a more effective one – rehearsing for a specific format leaves you exposed if anything differs on the day, whereas understanding what’s genuinely being assessed prepares you for whatever you’re faced with.
