This coaching was developed with an experienced simulator assessment recruiter, and it covers what happens either side of the handling. Candidates are assessed across a range of pilot competencies, in the simulator and out of it: how you brief, how you work with the other pilot, how you manage workload, and how you make decisions when things don’t go to plan. We’ll take you through each of them, with real scenarios where candidates came unstuck, and give you reliable techniques to approach any simulator assessment with confidence.

The Traditional Sim Prep Model

Traditionally, sim assessment focused solely on a candidate’s ability to manually fly the aircraft. However, airlines are increasingly keen to assess the other pilot competencies we know are vital for the safe operation of modern aircraft. In fact, it’s now relatively rare for a candidate to fail on manual flying alone – far more often, it’s the non-technical competencies, such as situational awareness and workload management, that make the difference.

Yes! Our coaching is built around the same competency-based, evidence-based principles that airlines now use to assess and train their pilots. You’ll learn reliable techniques so you go into any simulator assessment understanding exactly how you’re being assessed – and, crucially, how to evidence the competencies that make the difference.

Airlines frequently use simulator assessments as part of their recruitment process. The aim is to determine whether you’re likely to complete a type-rating course within the minimum footprint, and that you won’t represent a training risk to the airline – both now and in the future. In short, it’s their way of checking you’re ready for the demands of the role.

Most airline simulator assessments follow a broadly similar theme. You’ll almost certainly be assessed against the IATA pilot competencies, with a scenario designed to bring these out. It will usually be flown manually using “raw data,” though some use of the autopilot may be allowed, and the scenario will typically include an element designed to increase the crew’s workload. Our Simulator Assessment Preparation Coaching is specifically designed to train you to evidence the IATA pilot competencies in a simulator assessment.

Our training is designed around the pilot competencies, and it’s delivered online rather than in a simulator. While jumping into a sim for practice can be helpful, it’s usually the non-technical competencies – not manual flying – that catch pilots out in an assessment. That’s why our coaching focuses on those competencies and the techniques to evidence them, which is where preparation time makes the biggest difference.

It’s rarely raw handling. In our experience, it’s far more often the non-technical competencies – situational awareness, workload management, communication and decision-making – that catch people out. A candidate can fly the aircraft perfectly well but still struggle if their capacity is consumed by the flying, leaving nothing spare for the wider picture. Understanding this shift in emphasis is often the difference-maker, and it’s exactly what our coaching is built around.
