Frequently Asked Questions

Do you want to know more about how our pilot application training can help you nail your CV, covering letter and application questions and stand out from the very first stage of any airline or flight school process?

A strong pilot CV is clear, concise and tailored to the airline you’re applying to – not a generic document sent out to everyone. Recruiters typically spend very little time on each one, so the essentials need to stand out immediately. Keep it well-structured and easy to scan, usually to one or two pages, and make sure every detail is accurate and up to date.

Just as important is what you leave off and how you present the rest. A cluttered CV, inconsistent formatting, or irrelevant detail can count against you, while the right emphasis on your most relevant experience can make all the difference. Our Academy Application course walks you through exactly how to build a bespoke, impactful pilot CV of your own – showing you what airline recruiters are really looking for, so yours stands out for the right reasons from the very first stage.

Yes – and it’s one of the most important things you can do. Airlines differ in their ethos, what they prioritise and the aircraft they operate, so a single generic CV sent to everyone rarely does you justice. Tailoring each application lets you put the most relevant experience front and centre, mirror what that particular airline is looking for, and show genuine interest in them specifically – all of which recruiters notice.

That doesn’t mean starting from scratch every time. The smart approach is to build one strong, well-structured master CV, then adapt the emphasis for each airline you apply to. Our Academy Application course shows you exactly how to do this – how to create a bespoke, impactful CV of your own and tailor it efficiently, so every application stands out from the very first stage.

If it’s your own pilot CV design and template, then that’s absolutely fine! That said, we’d strongly recommend against using any service that writes your pilot CV for you. In our experience, recruiters can often spot a CV that isn’t genuinely your own – and it doesn’t create the best impression.

The same goes for AI. Using it as a tool to check your spelling or keep an eye on your word count is perfectly sensible – but the ideas, the examples and the writing should always be your own. Your CV needs to reflect the real you, because that’s exactly what recruiters are trying to assess. Give yourself the best chance of landing your dream flight deck job by putting the work in to create a really stand-out pilot CV.

Think carefully about the skills and qualities that would make you an asset to any airline you’re applying to. Airlines assess these through what are known as competencies – the core behaviours that make a safe, effective pilot. Alongside these, your technical credentials matter too: your licences, ratings, type experience and relevant flying hours.

The key isn’t simply to list these skills, but to evidence them. Anyone can claim to be a good communicator or team player – what sets a strong CV apart is evidencing each competency clearly. This is exactly what we train you to do: our Academy Application course shows you how to identify the competencies airlines are looking for and evidence them clearly and convincingly, so your CV stands out for the right reasons.

The key is to stop thinking about what you want from the airline, and start showing what you’d bring to them. That begins with research: understand the airline’s operation, fleet, routes, and ethos, so you can tailor everything you submit to reflect what they specifically look for in a pilot. A generic application rarely lands – one that clearly speaks to that airline stands out immediately.

From there, it’s about evidence. Rather than simply claiming you’d be a great fit, evidence it. Woven through your CV, covering letter and interview answers, this consistent, evidence-based picture is what convinces a recruiter you’re the right candidate. Our Academy courses train you in exactly how to do this, so you present yourself as someone who not only can do the job, but is the right fit for that airline.

Your cover letter is often the very first thing a recruiter reads, so it sets the tone for your entire application. While your CV lays out the facts – your licences, ratings and experience – the cover letter is where you bring them to life: explaining why you’re applying to that specific airline, what draws you to them, and what you’d bring to their flight deck. Done well, it turns a list of qualifications into a compelling case for you as a candidate.

Definitely! We’d strongly recommend writing a bespoke cover letter for each and every airline you apply to. Tailoring each one helps you stand out from the other pilots applying, and makes it far easier for recruiters to see exactly why your experience makes you an ideal candidate for their flight deck. Generic cover letters are easily spotted – and they rarely do you justice.

That doesn’t mean starting from scratch every time. The smart approach is to write one strong cover letter, then adapt it to reflect the specific airline you’re applying to. Our Academy Application course shows you exactly how to do this efficiently, so every application stands out from the very first stage.

No longer than one page. Make sure that everything you include on your pilot covering letter is relevant and concise – just like a brief in an aircraft. Around three 100 word paragraphs is about right.

Essay questions are frequently used at all levels of initial screening – by airlines, flight schools, and pilot sponsorship or scholarship schemes alike. They’re often poorly answered by candidates who underestimate them, treating them as a box-ticking exercise rather than a real opportunity to make their case. Recruiters and assessors are looking for two things: evidence that you genuinely understand the position or scheme you’re applying for, and evidence of how your competencies would make you a strong candidate worthy of further consideration.

In other words, a good answer is specific, well-structured and backed by real evidence – not generic. These questions are a genuine chance to stand out, so they’re well worth the time and thought. Put the effort in, and they can work firmly in your favour. Our Academy Application course shows you exactly how to approach them, so you evidence the right things in the right way.
