Simulator Assessment Preparation Course

Be prepared for any airline simulator assessment process!

Pilot Simulator Assessment preparation courses for pilots attending an airline simulator assessment day.

Much more than just simulator assessment preparation!

At Flight Deck Wingman we don’t like to follow the crowd! We don’t believe in the traditional “quick brief and then fly the sim” training model… so we have gone back to the drawing board and re-designed our simulator assessment training to reflect the criteria that airlines are currently using to select pilots. Our simulator assessment preparation training is in-depth, using evidence based training and assessment to ensure that you have all bases covered for any simulator assessment!

Leading our simulator assessment training team is a hugely experienced former pilot simulator assessor and current Airline Captain. Having assessed hundreds of potential candidates from airlines and flight schools all around the world, they know exactly what airlines are looking for when it comes to assessing candidates at the simulator assessment phase. It’s all about your manual flying skills in the sim assessment right? Wrong! Candidates are assessed in many pilot competency areas both in and out of the simulator. Using our proven approach of “Techniques Not Tip Offs” we will train you in reliable techniques, giving you the confidence to be successful with any simulator assessment process.

“Techniques Not Tip Offs” to pass any recruitment process!

Re-designing Simulator Assessment Prep

The Flight Deck Wingman team are extremely experienced in how airlines use the simulator phase to select pilots for their operation. So many simulator assessment prep companies place the main emphasis of their training on manual flying. Sure, we know that this is the bit pilots often worry most about, but should you? We don’t think so. Read on to learn why…

Traditionally, sim assessment has focused solely on a candidate’s ability to manually fly the aircraft. However, airlines are increasingly keen to assess the other pilot competencies which we know are vital for the safe operation of modern day aircraft. In one large airline’s recent sim assessment campaign, only 3% of candidates failed solely because of their manual flying!

Up-to-date training methods. Flight Deck Wingman has taken the typical and outdated sim assessment training format offered by most airline prep companies and re-designed it, making it fit for purpose for current airline selection processes.

Sim assessment pilot competencies. Our Simulator Assessment Preparation Training introduces critical simulator assessment pilot competencies in the classroom, before moving to the practical phase of the course. We explore what these competencies are, how they can be developed and most importantly how they can be effectively utilised to afford you the best chance of being successful in your simulator assessment.

Evidenced based training. The practical phase of the training day will give you the opportunity to put all of these “Techniques” into practise, all under the watchful and caring eye of a highly experienced simulator recruitment assessor.

Techniques Not Tip Offs! 99% of our clients are successful with the pre-simulator phase of their assessment. Why, you may ask? Where some companies attempt to replicate and “tip off” their clients as to what a specific airline recruitment process might be, we approach our training with reliable and easy to use “techniques” to be successful with any airline or operator.

We have applied the same training methodology into our simulator assessment preparation training too, meaning that you can enter any simulator assessment process with any airline, with total confidence!

Investigating why pilots fail simulator assessments. To start the day, we investigate some common misconceptions surrounding those that are unsuccessful during the simulator assessment phase and lay the foundations for the rest of the morning’s training!

Training you in simulator assessment pilot competencies. We explore what they are, how they can be developed and most importantly how they can be effectively utilised to afford you the best chance of being successful in your simulator assessment. The following areas and more are explored:

  • Professional Standards We look at everything from making a good first impression, getting off to a good start and what to do if things haven’t gone to plan – reviewing your own and your team performance may make the difference between success and failure.
  • Teamwork In this module, we take a close look at Teamwork, why it’s so important and crucially how to evidence it during your assessment, including tackling those tricky scenarios when you or your sim partner may be finding things challenging!
  • Workload Management & Situational Awareness Workload management and situational awareness are very closely linked. We will look at how to balance both effectively, through easy to use techniques that will allow you to perform to the best of your ability on the day.
  • Communication Skills We analyse why most people do not brief (and de-brief) effectively, along with practical examples of how to brief in a variety of different scenarios.
  • Decision Making In this module we investigate the benefits of utilising a structured decision making process, particularly when faced with non-normal scenarios – even if that’s things not going according to your plan!
  • Manual Flight/Automatic Flight We discuss techniques that will help ensure you arrive at your assessment feeling prepared for the manual and automatic flying elements of a simulator assessment. We will also cover the importance of error management to ensure you have the ability to recover and re-build after any mistakes that may arise.

Developing both PF and PM competency and skills. Typically you can expect to fly two short sectors, one as Pilot Flying (PF) and one as Pilot Monitoring (PM). Within this framework, your instructor will identify areas for development in your pilot competencies and offer strategies to improve them. For example, if a trainee is suffering a deterioration in their manual flying when the workload ramps up, we will introduce techniques to mitigate this.

Tailored training. Every course is designed around the needs of you, our client. You will receive highly tailored training which will address your individual needs. If you wish to focus on particular airfields or sectors, or a part of your operation that you feel needs development e.g. decision making, then we can accommodate this request with ease.

Highly effective techniques to get you to where you want to be – in pole position to pass any sim assessment!

Every client will be encouraged and supported to deliver an effective review of both their own and the overall crew performance.

Each client will receive a detailed and confidential PDF report written by an experienced airline simulator recruiter and TRE, enabling you to identify any areas of your operation that require further development.
